‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Gets Series Order From HBO
HBO greenlights hour-long drama series Crazy Rich Asiansa sequel to the hit film that became the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade. The film’s lead actors, Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Emmy winner Ronny Chieng, will star in the series, alongside Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, on a recurring basis.
Best of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling books, the series, in development at HBO for about two years, features the film’s co-writer Adele Lim, director Jon M. Chu, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
The project, initially set up at HBO Max, which commissioned a development room in early 2025, is now moving to HBO proper, a migration previously undertaken by other high-profile Warner Bros.-based series. IP, including Harry Potter, Dune: Prophecy, Computer Science: Welcome to Derry, The Penguin And Lanterns.
“We are so excited to have Adele and the team behind this historic film bringing the next chapter of this story to life,” said Casey Bloys, co-president and chief content officer of Skydance Direct-To-Consumer. “Constance, Henry, Ronny and Michelle are global superstars, and we know passionate fans of the bestselling film and novels can’t wait to see more. We’re excited to be partnering with this talented production team and cast.”
THE Crazy Rich Asians the TV series is produced by Lim through his production company 100 Tigers; Chu through his production company Electric Somewhere; Kwan, Jacobson and Simpson through their production company Color Force, which developed and produced the film; Chloé Dan and Jeannine Tang for SK Global Entertainment, which co-financed the film; Emmy winner Naia Cucukov Richards via Lim’s 100 Tigers; and Emmy nominee Rose Lam. The series is co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
It should be noted that the television series is a drama while the film took the romantic comedy route. The genre was determined early in the series’ development.
“From a bestselling novel to a blockbuster film and now television, Crazy Rich Asians “has cemented its place as one of the most beloved stories in popular culture,” added Channing Dungey, chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks. Kevin Kwan has created an irresistible world filled with the perfect blend of glitter, humor and heart, and the talented Adele Lim returns to adapt this famous tale for a new television audience. We are also delighted to welcome Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh to reprise their iconic roles. We can’t wait to bring this series to life with our partners at HBO.
Lim added: “It’s a crazy rich family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we have eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books. Working with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is buzzing and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.
Crazy Rich Asians (book and film) follows the love story of Chinese-American Rachel (Wu) and her fiancé Nick (Golding) as they travel to visit family and friends in her native Singapore. Rachel will have some surprises to discover before she walks down the aisle, including the fact that Nick’s family is extremely wealthy.
“I am delighted that the Crazy Rich Asians The family reunites thanks to HBO and Warner Bros. Television: Kwan said. “Our incredible fans around the world have been patiently waiting for this, and it’s worth it! Seeing my stories and characters come to life with the breath of an HBO series is a dream come true, and I’m so excited to experience the magic that Adele, Jon, Nina, Brad, our incredible writers, and our iconic cast will create.”
Chu added: “Eight years ago, Crazy Rich Asians changed my life and I got to make it happen with the most creative and hilarious group of people I have ever known. Since then, these actors have gone on to become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling entertainers, and even an Oscar winner, so bringing everyone together feels like coming home. It’s been incredible to see audiences make this film a part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie, and I can’t wait to share what’s next. Finally, I can answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: “When will we get the sequel?” Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring this extraordinary gang together again for a series that picks up where the movie left off,” Jacobson and Simpson said. “As producers, the most common question we get asked is: ‘When will we get more Crazy Rich Asians?’ and we are very happy to finally have the answer.
