Quentin Tarantino’s screenplays can be, like the director himself, a little talky.

Still, removing more than a quarter of a Tarantino script seems like a pretty bold move.

David Fincher says he did just that: cut 60 pages of Tarantino’s script to The other misadventures of Cliff BoothTHE Once upon a time in Hollywood sequel with Brad Pitt which arrives in theaters and on Netflix.

“I liked the idea of it being a bonfire story,” the director said. Empire review. “It wasn’t so much about the plot as it was about how the participants clashed in the back streets of Hollywood in 1977…The first draft I read was 230 pages. It was basically two films. Somewhere in there was the Venn diagram of what Brad wanted to do, what I wanted to do, what Quentin wanted to do. Not ‘want to do,’ but the areas we would focus on.”

Fincher said he cut 60 pages to make a film that lasts two hours and 20 minutes, a little less Once upon a timeThe running time is two hours and 41 minutes.

Interestingly, while Fincher says the film wasn’t really about the plot, Tarantino suggests that the film is very much about the plot. “I don’t consider it a relaxing movie at all,” Tarantino said. “Once upon a time in Hollywood It was a chill movie, but you know you’re going there (the site of the Charles Manson murders). He has that strength, so I didn’t need a lot of intrigue. This scenario was very different. To me it had the flavor of an Elmore Leonard paperback: a detective story paperback feel.

Of course, Tarantino already adapted a Leonard story into the 1997 film. Jackie Brown.

It will be interesting to hear Tarantino’s final verdict on Fincher’s film. The director left the Oliver Stone film in 1994. Natural killerswhich was heavily rewritten and aggressively stylized. Still, Tarantino loved Tony Scott’s version of his script for 1993. True noveland once said, “Actually, I think Tony made it a better movie than I would have made it at the time.” True novel “It’s a case where everything worked, everything completely worked” (although he was initially upset that the film was changed to have a happy ending).

The other misadventures of Cliff Booth gets an exclusive two-week run in Imax theaters worldwide starting November 25, then debuts on Netflix on December 23.

Here is the detailed official description and trailer: “Murder, blackmail, robbery, extortion – just another summer in Hollywood. 1977, eight years since Cliff Booth (Pitt) met the Manson Family in Quentin Tarantino’s 1969 side story, Once upon a time… in Hollywood. In The other misadventures of Cliff BoothDirected by David Fincher from a new screenplay by Tarantino, the fairy tale is finished. Los Angeles doesn’t need a hippie-killing stuntman like it used to. But Hollywood will always have problems, problems that can only be solved by someone with Cliff’s unique (sometimes extralegal) abilities. When he’s not making a living as a bartender or projectionist, Cliff Booth is a fixer – solving situations for the greats and, sometimes, the not-so-greats of Hollywood.

The description continues: “He is curious when he receives a call from talent agent Karen Crosby (Elizabeth Debicki), on behalf of her client, TV megastar Charlie Peters (Scott Caan) – a man known for doing his job. own waterfalls. And he’s even more entertained and intrigued when he meets other characters from Charlie’s world, from his famous wife Toni (Carla Gugino) to professional football champion turned movie star Roderick “Hot Rod” Harrison (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Then there are the Verdusco brothers (Matt Groove and JB Tadena), mysterious gangsters who wreak havoc throughout the city. What was once a fairy tale is now a detective story – a cocktail of violence, ambition and desire that could only happen in Los Angeles. »
