Police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are searching for suspects after four people were shot dead and four others injured near the capital, Kingstown, in an apparent act of gang violence in the Caribbean country.
Police responded Friday evening to reports of shots fired in the Green Hill community in central Kingstown, Acting Police Commissioner Trevor Bailey said at a news conference Saturday.

“Two bodies were found lying on a public road,” Bailey said. “The body of a woman was discovered in a vehicle parked on a public road, and in an adjacent lot another body was discovered.”
A preliminary examination revealed that all four victims had what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Four other people were taken to Milton Cato Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds. Two were treated and released, while two remained in hospital Saturday.
Police said no arrests had been made and they had not publicly established a motive for the killings.
“Unfortunately, we have not been able to make any arrests in connection with last night’s shooting,” Deputy Police Commissioner Brenton Smith told reporters. “And as soon as the information and the investigation are completed, you will know the motivations.”
The killings come as authorities face gang violence and reprisals involving rival groups. Police have recorded 37 homicides in St. Vincent and the Grenadines so far this year.
“We saw retaliation…one group going after another,” Bailey said. “We condemn it.”
This country of 32 islands, known for its white sand beaches and clear waters, is a popular yachting destination for wealthy tourists. It has long depended on tourism as its main source of income.
Authorities said they were stepping up their response in the wake of the violence, including increased patrols, searches and increased intelligence sharing between police units.
Bailey particularly called on young people to stay away from criminal groups and violence.
“I call on the youth of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to be model citizens, to renounce crime and violence,” he said. “Violence has no place in our society.”
