Democratic socialist agenda threatens Florida’s booming economy

Comments Off on Democratic socialist agenda threatens Florida’s booming economy

Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., speaks with Fox News Digital about how democratic socialist policies, government overreach and taxpayer waste threaten Florida’s booming free enterprise economy.

“Give us more power or give us more money.”

According to U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., that’s the basic formula behind the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) platform — an economic model that the Florida Republican told Fox News Digital is failing in cities across the country and goes against America’s founding principles.

In her Senate race against DSA member and Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon, Moody warns that what she describes as a far-left agenda could undermine the free enterprise model that she says has helped make Florida an economic powerhouse.

“It’s a slap in the face to Americans that their hard-earned taxpayers’ money has gone to criminals and corruption and fraud. So I’m really proud to be one of the first members of the Senate task force to combat some of these things,” Moody told Fox News Digital in an interview in Miami.

“In Florida, we’ve had the highest average tax yield of any state in the country. That’s real money we’re putting in your pocket, goodwill efforts to make sure people understand we know who can spend their money best.”

“Their answer to everything, whether it’s affordability, whether it’s a challenge that you have with a certain business situation, whether it’s health care, I mean, you name it,” she continued. “It will come down to one of two things: either give us more power to control businesses, let the government tell you how things should be done, or give us more money and trust we will make things better.”

Households across the country continue to face pressures from inflation and the high cost of living. The most recent Consumer Price Index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that inflation rose 0.4% on a monthly basis and 3.4% from a year ago.

Moody emphasized that a priority of Republican tax policy is allowing Americans to keep more of their income through tax deductions for tips and overtime, tax breaks for seniors and an expanded child tax credit. Meanwhile, priorities associated with the DSA include Medicare for All, free child care and paid family leave, rent freezes and eviction moratoriums, a universal employment program, wealth taxes, and reduced military spending.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody reacts to DSA-backed candidate Angie Nixon’s primary victory and warns of the rise of democratic socialism in the state.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won the 2025 mayoral election after campaigning on proposals including universal child care, a rent freeze for rent-stabilized apartments, and higher taxes on millionaires. His election also raised concerns among some New Yorkers, leading to a new wave of wealth migration to low-tax, low-regulation states like Florida.

“Look at what happened under (President Joe) Biden. It exploded in terms of costs to people. When they crowd in and crowd out private markets, the government only makes things worse,” said Moody, a former federal prosecutor, judge and Florida attorney general. “I was shocked to see that the Democrats’ response to everything (is), ‘Give us more control.’ Give us money. We will make things better” when it’s proven that it doesn’t work.”

Florida’s economy, meanwhile, has grown to $1.8 trillion, making it the 14th largest economy in the world and surpassing Australia and Mexico in gross domestic product, according to a July 2026 report from the Florida Chamber Foundation. The organization said Florida’s economy grew 6.3 percent from the previous year.

The senator further argued that federal intervention in the private sector increases costs to the consumer and reduces quality, while competition in the private market keeps prices lower and encourages innovation.

“If my opponent had her way…the government would control everything. And look how that’s worked in other countries.”

Florida is home to a large Cuban exile community, including families who left the island after the communist revolution. Cuba’s state-controlled economy is grappling with widespread shortages, recurring power outages and prolonged economic crises.

Independent Women’s Vice President of Economic Policy Patrice Onwuka speaks to Fox News Digital after receiving backlash for an opinion piece in which she claimed socialist policies threatened her family’s American dream.

Before Mamdani’s election, Karen Rodriguez, a Cuban resident of Miami, told Fox News Digital: “When I hear some of the plans that (Mamdani) has for New York, again, it’s ‘copy, paste’… It’s just very triggering because it doesn’t work… You have Cubans, they come here to the United States, and they walk into a grocery store and they cry… When was the last time you cried in a grocery store?” Never, right? Because it’s so normal and we take it for granted.”

“When the revolution happened and (Fidel) Castro said, ‘This is for the workers, by the workers,’ what happened immediately afterward was the government seized private industry, which ultimately led to bread lines and blackouts and oppression of their people. They drove out private industry,” Moody said.

“The DSA platform, which is to allow the government to control private industry, major private markets, and its attack on every structure that is supposed to protect our citizens, from the military to the police to the prisons, its attack on the very foundations of this country, allowing non-citizen voting, is erosive to the strength of this nation and the rights of our people.”

Nixon’s campaign did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on Moody’s remarks and Nixon’s policy positions.

“It should scare anyone to read the agenda,” Moody said.

“I see it in the Senate every day. They don’t really have any policy solutions to the challenges we face. Forget all the words and think about what they’re really saying when you ask them, ‘Okay, what would your solution be?’ The solution is: let the government control everything,” she added. “And so I think the reason you don’t see more in-depth interviews is because at the end of the day their solutions come down to two things: more power to the government and more money to the government…The American people have not signed up for that, the Floridians have not signed up for that.”
