DeSantis calls for accountability following Hope Florida report leak
MIAMI — Republican governor. Ron DeSantis on Thursday called for prosecution of the people behind a leaked grand jury report that was sharply critical of the Hope Florida scandal, a day after an appeals court ruled the report should never have been released.
During a press conference at the Greater Miami Expressway Agency, DeSantis took the stand and answered questions for about an hour, arguing that the scandal was a “hoax” and defending the staffers and officials named in the report, saying their reputations had been unfairly tarnished. Wednesday’s ruling by a three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal ordered the report expunged from public records.
“I don’t think you can just say we’re just going to move on,” DeSantis said. “I think you have to hold people accountable who are leaking this because I think it’s very, very serious and political.”
DeSantis was joined by the Florida Attorney General James Uthmeierwhose name was mentioned several times in the grand jury report and who is running to retain his seat in November. Uthmeier said law enforcement is looking into the matter and if they find a violation, state prosecutors or the state’s attorney could then file charges.
