First flu-related death of the season reported in eastern Idaho
BLACKFOOT — A person over the age of 75 in Bingham County has died from a flu-related illness, according to Southeast Idaho Public Health.
This death marks the first flu-associated death in eastern Idaho during the 2026-2027 flu season and the third in the state.
Idaho has averaged about 60 flu-related deaths per year over the past five seasons, with most deaths occurring in people over the age of 50, according to a news release from Southeast Idaho Public Health.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause fever, headache, fatigue, cough and sore throat. Although many people recover within a few days, the virus can cause serious complications and even death.
People most at risk of serious illness include adults over 50, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses and those living in long-term care facilities.
Health authorities recommend that everyone aged 6 months and older receive an annual flu vaccine. Residents who have not yet been vaccinated can contact their health care provider, local public health district or pharmacy.
Other precautions include washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding close contact with sick people, and staying home when sick.
