
Global benchmarks mixed as oil prices rise
TOKYO (AP) — Global stocks are trading mixed Thursday, driven by investor interest in technology-related issues and lingering concerns over the war in Iran.
France’s CAC 40 fell 1.8% to 7,822.48 in early trading, while Germany’s DAX fell 1.4% to 24,851.94. Britain’s FTSE 100 index fell 1.8% to 10,413.86. US stocks are expected to fall with Dow futures down 0.4% to 50,981.00. S&P 500 futures were little changed, up less than 0.1% at 7,720.00.
In Asia, Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index jumped 3.3% to end at 68,956.72. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index lost almost 2.0% to 8,614.40. South Korea’s Kospi edged up 2.0% to 6,971.35.
Markets in Hong Kong and Shanghai were closed for a national holiday.
In Tokyo, issues expected to benefit from solid demand for computer chips and AI-related growth finished higher, including Advantest Corp., Tokyo Electron and SoftBank Group Corp.
In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude gained 2.06% to $92.28 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, rose 2.03% to $100.02 a barrel.
Oil prices have fluctuated wildly in recent months amid uncertainty over when the war with Iran will fully restore the flow of crude. Iranian officials said Wednesday they had received an official response from the United States. to Tehran’s latest proposal aimed at ending the seven month war. Officials did not say what the latest response contained or whether it was a rejection.
American President Donald Trump publicly rejected Iran’s proposal a few days earlier reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States meets certain conditions.
The yen’s weakening trend has not changed despite a report from the Bank of Japan this gave a positive reading of the economy.
