Google rolls out “massive” update to Pixel Buds Pro, Pro 2 and 2a

Following the addition of the Gemini control last month, Google is rolling out a significant firmware update to the Pixel Buds Pro, Pro 2, and Pixel Buds 2a.
The only feature exclusive to Pixel Buds Pro 2 is Dynamic active noise cancellation. Google will “automatically adjust the sound or noise cancellation based on your headset.” This compensates for “subtle changes” when the earbuds move in your ear.
The remaining features are available for Pixel Buds Pro (2022), Pro 2 (2024), and 2a (2025). When these features were previewed in August, Google didn’t mention that the original Pro model would get this update.
With last month’s Pixel Buds companion app update, you can enable active noise cancellation, adjust EQ, and enable touch controls with Gemini voice commands.
During phone calls, Tap to mute allows you to mute and unmute the microphone by pressing the earbuds. This gesture requires a linked Pixel phone.
Pixel Buds can now auto-pause media playback when you fall asleep, which is determined by the Pixel Watch’s sleep detection. This will also disable touch gestures and silent notifications.
The final update is Improved live translation which allows you to “leave your phone in your pocket and start translating instantly with a simple tap of your headphones”.
Whether you’re talking with someone or using listening mode to stay aware of your surroundings in a foreign language, Pixel Buds work seamlessly with the Google Translate app to make translating on the go easier than ever.
Make sure you are using the latest version of the Pixel Buds app and look for software version_6.144. Open the companion client and scroll down to More Settings > Firmware Update to check.
