Google contracted for 3,590 megawatts of electricity from Constellation Energy in the largest U.S. power grid, with new nuclear power accounting for about a quarter of that supply, the companies said Tuesday.
The deal will enable Constellation to make more than $4.3 billion in new investments and will involve an increase in capacity at several of the power company’s nuclear reactors in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions, the companies said.
Big tech companies are racing to secure massive amounts of electricity to power data centers across the United States by striking unprecedented deals with the country’s power companies.
Over the past two years, Constellation has unveiled an agreement to restart its Three Mile Island reactor in Pennsylvania to serve Microsoft data centers, while Google has committed to restart NextEra Energy nuclear power plant in Iowa.
Under the latest deal, Google entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement for 890 megawatts of electricity from several nuclear plants owned by Constellation, which would be upgraded to produce more electricity from existing reactors.
Power produced by the first of the upgraded plants is expected to be delivered in 2028, the companies said.
Google also entered into a long-term supply agreement for an additional 2,700 megawatts of electricity from Constellation to PJM. This energy is not tied to a specific generation source and provides long-term revenue certainty for Constellation’s operating plants, Google said.
Constellation, based in Maryland, is the largest operator of nuclear power plants in the United States and has a large fleet of natural gas-fired power plants.
“We are committed to meeting our growth responsibly by actively investing in clean, reliable energy that brings new capabilities to our nation’s grids,” Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s global head of energy and power, said in a statement.
The 11 nuclear units expected to be upgraded as part of the Google deal are in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, within the coverage area of the largest US power grid – PJM Interconnection.
PJM management has proposed requiring grid-connected data center customers in 13 states to bring their own power or risk being remotely cut off from grid power during periods of peak demand.
The deal between Google and Constellation addresses PJM’s “bring your own power” proposition, the companies said.
