Trump to announce plan for submarine shipyard at Sparrows Point
POINT DES MOINEAUX, Maryland. —
President Donald Trump is expected to visit Baltimore County on Tuesday to make a major announcement.
The president will tour Tradepoint Atlantic with Anduril Industries, a defense technology company based in Sparrows Point, and announce that the former Bethlehem Steel site will be transformed into a 2 million square foot shipyard for Virginia-class attack submarines.
According to a press briefing, components of the submarines, such as torpedo tubes, sterns and bow sections, will be built at the Sparrows Point site.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it would be the largest private investment in Maryland in more than a decade.
“Through this facility, thousands of Marylanders will benefit from new pathways to work, wages and wealth through advanced training and high-skilled jobs in maritime manufacturing,” Moore said. “We thank Anduril for choosing Maryland and we stand ready to build the future of the aerospace and defense economy together.”
The facility is expected to support 14,000 jobs, including the creation of 3,100 permanent jobs. Within a decade, Arsenal-2, the name of the new industrial base, would become the largest job creator in the state.
“For generations, this site has shaped America’s steel and shipbuilding heritage, including its crucial role during World War II, when workers here built the ships that helped defend our nation,” Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier said in a statement.
The $3.7 billion private investment will become the largest private investment in the state.
“With Arsenal-2, Anduril will bring large-scale shipbuilding back to a site that can once again define American naval power. This facility will make Baltimore County a vital part of America’s undersea industrial base, adding the production capacity the Navy needs to meet its Virginia-class requirements,” said Brian Schimpf, co-founder and CEO of Anduril.
Under the agreement, the state and Baltimore County will provide up to 13 percent of the planned investment through existing economic incentive programs and new appropriations.
The state would also support the construction of a workforce training center near Tradepoint Atlantic.
The Maryland Transit Administration issued a service advisory during the president’s visit that could result in delays and possible route diversions, including for the Route 411T commuter bus, which serves Tradepoint Atlantic directly.
