Halloween weekend shootings leave at least 6 dead and dozens injured in the United States
Mass shootings over Halloween weekend in nightlife districts across the United States left at least six people dead and dozens injured, officials said.
The deadliest violence took place in Dallas, where a handful of shootings in the city’s Deep Ellum neighborhood, a hub for music, restaurants and nightlife, killed four people and injured 15 others, police said.

Police in college towns like Fayetteville, Arkansas; Birmingham, Ala.; Newark, Delaware, and Bloomington, Illinois, also reported shootings in their nighttime neighborhoods.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said investigators were still trying to determine whether three separate shootings Saturday night, over a period of about an hour and 15 minutes, were related, and it was not immediately clear why they started. Comeaux said some arrests were made, but he did not say how many or what charges were involved.
“It’s a very big stage. It’s spread out,” Comeaux said.
The department had increased police presence in the area before the shooting. No police officers were injured.
Shooting occurred after Alabama football game
In Birmingham, one person was killed and eight others injured in two separate shootings just outside Legion Field after the annual “Magic City Classic” football game Saturday night, Mayor Randall Woodfin said at a news conference Sunday.
Two of them were in critical condition Sunday, firefighters said.
Alabama State and Alabama A&M are rivals whose annual contest has been played for more than 100 years. Nearly 70,000 fans attended Saturday’s game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28. The event draws some of the largest crowds in the country for games played in their college football division.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most of the spectators and their families left the stadium after the game. The first shooting happened nearby, where vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue.
The circumstances of the shooting were not clear, nor was it clear where the death occurred.
Police spokesman De’Rell Freeman said one person was arrested and “multiple weapons” were found.
Shootings in other nightlife areas
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot Saturday night near the University of Delaware campus, said Newark police Lt. Greg D’Elia.
All six were transported to hospitals for treatment and their condition was not available. A university spokesperson said it would provide updates on the investigation online as they become available.
A video shared on social media showed people fleeing the scene to safety. A stretch of the town’s main street was closed for several hours after the shooting, police said.

A shooting early Sunday in Bloomington, Illinois, left a 19-year-old woman dead and another woman in critical condition. Six other people had injuries of unknown nature that were not life-threatening. The shooting happened near the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. Bloomington is approximately 135 miles (217 kilometers) southwest of Chicago.
In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds following a shooting Sunday morning near the University of Arkansas. No arrests have been made, police said in a statement. A preliminary investigation indicates that an altercation preceded the shooting.
Halloween stores were the scene of two attacks
Two people were killed in separate shootings at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan on Friday.
Police say a shooting at a store in Fairfield, California, was a targeted attack. Family members told police the deceased woman, 31, was pregnant. Six other people were injured, police said. There was no immediate arrest.
In Madison Heights, Michigan, just north of Detroit, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot Friday afternoon. A man who was attacked by bystanders while officers were arresting him was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Raby was reported in Charleston, West Virginia. AP reporter Claudia Lauer in Philadelphia contributed to this report.
