Sometimes all you need is a dose of kindness to brighten your day – and puffins are arguably one of the cutest birds in the world.

These pint-sized “sea parrots,” as they are sometimes called, don’t even need to do anything to melt hearts. Conservationist and author Dr Katie Elizabeth Thompson shared a video on Instagram showing how adorable these little birds are when they’re living their best lives.

“Netflix is cool, but imagine spending hours sitting on Skomer Island watching puffins go by,” says the on-screen text as a small puffin hops along the grass – inches from Thompson’s outstretched legs – looks around and then leaves, completely unconcerned by its presence.

Puffins spend all winter at sea. But in spring and summer, it is possible to see them in their breeding colonies when their iconic striped beaks are on display. Smaller birds have more inconspicuous winter plumage and their beaks are discolored when not using them to attract mates.

Skomer, off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales, is known for its breeding colony of puffins. Tens of thousands of small birds visit the island every year between April and July.

“I could watch these forever,” Thompson added in the caption.
