St. Louis will add an international flight next year, when Icelandair launches service between St. Louis’ Lambert International Airport and Iceland.

According to the airline’s website, Icelandair would add St. Louis as its 16th destination in the United States.

The airline will operate four weekly non-stop flights between Reykjavik and St. Louis starting May 14, 2027. Flights will continue until October 24.

“St. Louis has long been known as the gateway to the West,” Tómas Ingason, Icelandair’s chief commercial officer, said at a news conference announcing the new flight. “From next May, it will also become the gateway to Iceland, then to Europe. »

The new route marks the return of nonstop service between St. Louis and Iceland. Previously, WOW Air operated flights between Lambert and Iceland, but the airline ceased operations in 2019.

Icelandair’s service adds to a growing list of international flights to Lambert. The airport offers daily direct flights to London via British Airways And five weekly flights to Germany via Lufthansa.

Brad Dean, CEO and president of the Explore St. Louis region tourism bureau, said the new flight path will add momentum to other recently added international travel. He said that according to Amadeus, an organization that tracks travel, hotel reservations in St. Louis and St. Louis County have increased 12 percent over the past year, bucking a national trend.

“What we saw in 2026 is when you add additional capacity to Lambert International Airport, residents and businesses here benefit, and visitors from around the world are really ready to benefit,” Dean said.

Dean said Explore St. Louis is working on projects to further promote flying in the United States and abroad.

“This helps elevate the St. Louis region not only as a great leisure destination, but also as a much more competitive meetings and convention destination,” Dean said.

Mayor Cara Spencer and St. Louis County Executive Sam Page, who both attended the event, called the new flight another opportunity to put St. Louis on the map as a global destination.

“We’re opening a door that allows more people to experience our city and of course gives St. Louisans another opportunity to experience the world,” Spencer said. “Having a direct international flight to Iceland gives St. Louisans more choices about where to travel, where to go, and where to see the world.”
