iPhone Duo shows what the future of smartphones could look like

Since the unveiling of the iPhone Duo, the idea of all the main navigation elements of the interface being accessible from your thumb has been really interesting. Apple reinvented the idea of smartphone navigation with the iPhone Duo’s exterior display, and it now seems entirely wrong that every smartphone places things at the top.
Everyone longs for the days when phones were smaller, largely because things were more accessible. The downside is that your screen is quite small and the content landscape has evolved from that.
The iPhone Duo solves both of these problems by still offering a reasonably large rectangular viewing area to the left of the dock and a navigation area to the right. You still benefit from a large viewing area and always have everything within reach.
Since Apple introduced it, many enthusiasts have discussed the idea of an “iPhone Solo”, that is to say a screen the size of an iPhone Duo, except that it is not foldable.
While I doubt Apple would come up with this, I think it’s a pretty interesting idea, and maybe one day it might make sense depending on the iPhone Duo’s performance. If you think about it, the current form factor of smartphones is a matter of chance. We had 16:9 screens, and then we decided to remove all the bezels and the home button, which turned the phones into this weirdly tall device where things aren’t really accessible.
The iPhone Duo has redesigned the format of a smartphone. Apple didn’t just put regular iOS on the outer screen and shut it down. They redesigned it to make it optimal, and now I envy the fact that my phone is so big.
We’ll see what happens. An iPhone Solo could easily happen if people get the Duo’s exterior screen well.
