Comments Off on ‘It’s 100% him’: Newly released video shows the moment police arrest Luigi Mangione

Newly released body camera footage shows the moment Pennsylvania police confront Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s and later find a gun, magazine and silencer in his backpack.

In the footage, officers approach Mangione and ask him to remove his mask.

“Yeah, sure,” Mangione says.

An officer immediately appears to recognize him as the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

“It’s 100% him,” an officer says outside the Altoona McDonald’s.

“I told you, man,” said another.

CNN first reported on the videos and said they were played during a suppression hearing last year but had not been made public until now. NBC News obtained copies.

Thompson, 50, was shot in the back on Dec. 4, 2024, while heading to a UnitedHealthcare investor conference in Manhattan. Security video shows Mangione approaching him from behind and opening fire. Thompson was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Mangione was arrested at McDonald’s five days later, after being recognized from photos released by police.

In the footage, officers say Mangione checked into a hostel with fake IDs and asked him what name he used.

“Is that your name, Mark Rosario?” » asks an officer.

“Uh, no, sir,” Mangione said, sitting with his arms crossed. He then gives his real name.

Officers search his backpack at McDonald’s and find a gun magazine.

“That’s a f***ing him, man,” one officer said. “Fucks him. 100%.”

Mangione was taken to the police station, where officers found other items, including a gun, a silencer, a gun magazine hidden in underwear and a journal with handwritten notes.

“He has a handgun, a suppressor, his cell phone is in a Faraday bag. He has a checklist for today. Tomorrow he’s supposed to do an intelligence check and get a survival kit,” another officer says on the phone.

In August, Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges. In a court filing, he said that in 2024, he posed as a potential investor managing more than $50 billion in assets and emailed UnitedHealthcare executives to confirm the location of the investor conference so he could follow Thompson.

Mangione, from a prominent Baltimore family, said he went to New York “with the intention of shooting Brian Thompson.” He said he was driven to kill Thompson because of his experience with the health care system as a patient with a back injury.

Prosecutors said Mangione was never a customer and had no personal connection to the insurance giant.

His state trial, which includes a second-degree murder charge, was scheduled to begin in September, but a judge postponed it to give prosecutors time to respond to a double jeopardy request from his lawyers. Mangione’s defense argues the state charges should be dismissed because he pleaded guilty to the federal charges.
