Kirk Goldsberry: Duren should ‘take the money’
Christian Romo
NBA analyst Kirk Goldsberry appeared on a Wednesday episode of The Ringer’s Bill Simmons Podcast, saying Duren should accept the five-year, $200 million contract he was reportedly offered.
“I’m usually pretty nuanced on this subject… but he has to take the money,” he said. “I think some agents around the league aren’t doing a great job of informing their players that it’s just a different era. Five years and $200 million at 22 years old is a lot.”

Whatever Duren decides, the money will be the same

ESPN’s Bobby Marks broke down the two financial paths available to Duren, and their value is quite similar even though one carries much more risk. The Pistons’ five-year, $200 million extension offer averages $40 million per year. An outside team next season would be limited to offering Duren about $189 million over four years, which is a higher annual average, but it would still amount to about $200 million over five years, including the $9.6 million qualifying offer.
For Duren, that means accepting a $200 million guarantee now, or accepting the one-year qualifying offer and betting on himself to land a $189 million max contract next summer. If he opts for the latter option, it will mean his decision was driven by his negative feelings toward the Pistons franchise and his desire to play elsewhere rather than simply his finances.

Langdon: “(Duren) will be a Detroit Piston”
Christian Romo
At media day on Monday, September 28, Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon said he looked forward to Duren’s return, regardless of the center’s upcoming decision.
“Whatever his decision is, what we can control is how we greet him when he makes that decision,” Langdon said. “He’s going to be an important part of the team no matter what decision he makes. He’s going to be a Detroit Piston and we’re going to do everything we can to support him and get the best version of him, that’s what we’ve done the last two years, and that’s not going to change. Those are things we can control. The decision is not a decision we can control.”
