James Gunn confirms he’s “already” writing his next project
James Gunn announced on Threads that he is actively working on writing his next film before the release of “Superman: Man of Tomorrow”, scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
In response to a comment asking: “Are you ready to write your next film, James, or not yet?” Gunn wrote: “Already in. Had to do something while waiting for the assembly!”
Gunn also confirmed on the platform that the editing of “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” has been completed. In August, he had already confirmed that filming on the superhero film had been completed.
“Superman: Man of Tomorrow” is the sequel to 2025’s “Superman,” with David Corenswet returning as the Man of Steel. In the sequel, Superman is forced to team up with his adversary Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) as they work to defeat an even greater threat: the superintelligent antagonist Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).
Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane. Other returning cast members include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Milly Alcock, who appeared as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, returns for “Man of Tomorrow” after headlining this summer’s DC tentpole, “Supergirl.” The sequel will also introduce Aaron Pierre to the big screen as John Stewart, who makes his debut in the HBO Max series “Lanterns.”
In addition to writing and directing his “Superman” films, Gunn began leading DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in 2022.
“Peter is the best,” Gunn said. Variety in January. “He does everything I don’t do well. He keeps the ship steady, keeps everyone aligned, connects us with Jim Lee and the comics side and unifies departments that operated separately. What we share is a true love for these characters. We know what a privilege it is to help shape the way people see them now – and that responsibility is something we take seriously.”
