Manganiello married Modern family star in 2015, and he says his health took a turn for the worse soon after. According to PeopleManganiello writes about his excruciating abdominal pain due to ulcers on his digestive tract, which ultimately led to multiple invasive procedures. “I was getting sicker and sicker,” he says.

THE Real blood The former student lost 60 pounds and underwent multiple colonoscopies and “a major organ amputation” to remove part of his intestine. Although he never received a conclusive diagnosis, Manganiello says he has “all the scars to prove it.”
“(Autoimmune) diseases are a dumping ground for things that (doctors) don’t understand. They start putting you on a whole range of medications,” he writes.

Manganiello says he was prescribed medications to treat Crohn’s disease and colitis, but “none of them worked” for him. This led him to seek pain relief through hydrocodone pills, fentanyl patches and marijuana, although this conflicted with his 13 years of sobriety.
“I didn’t think I deserved to say I was sober,” he says, “(but) I had to prioritize the pain and the condition.”
All this, he explains, affected his marriage to Vergara, who had “become devoid of all emotion”. By PeopleManganiello claims Vergara “refused to hug him even when he begged” and treated him differently.

“I had to give up my gun because I was thinking about it, and then the dog came. I went from being a patient to being a guard,” Manganiello wrote.
He and Vergara, 54, separated after nearly a decade of marriage in 2023 and finalized their divorce the following year.
