Venezuelan President meets UN Secretary General and financial institutions in New York

Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez, who is making an exceptional exit from her country for the United Nations General Assembly in New York, greeted the organization’s secretary general on Monday after meeting with the leaders of three major international financial institutions.

In office since the capture of Nicolas Maduro by the American army in January, Ms. Rodriguez is trying to bring the country out of its isolation on the international scene, normalizing its relations with many countries but also international organizations.

This is the first participation of a Venezuelan leader in the UN Assembly since 2018.

Mired in his war in Iran, Trump expected at the UN

The head of Iranian diplomacy in New York for the UN General Assembly

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday to attend the United Nations General Assembly, his ministry announced.

Mr. Araghchi is the most important Iranian official to enter American territory since the outbreak of war in the Middle East, which began with the United States and Israel’s strikes against Iran at the end of February.

After his arrival, Mr. Araghchi spoke by telephone with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the high-level week’s agenda, according to Iranian television.

Paris is working on a Security Council resolution on Hormuz

France is working on a new UN Security Council resolution aimed at unblocking the Strait of Hormuz, a diplomatic source told journalists.

“France wants to work with the Americans and its partners on a Security Council resolution guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” said this source.

Last April, Russia and China vetoed a draft resolution, carried by Bahrain and supported by the Gulf countries and the United States, already calling for the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz.
