American envoy Jared Kushner is due to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel on Monday to try to advance the American peace plan in Gaza, which the leader has so far rejected.

Jared Kushner, also President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, met with leaders of the Palestinian Hamas movement in Egypt on Sunday. Hamas gave its agreement at the end of July to an American road map, supposed to launch the second stage of the plan, providing for the disarmament of the Islamist movement and the Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian territory.

Benjamin Netanyahu officially rejected the text by demanding “real” disarmament of Hamas.

According to sources who requested anonymity, Jared Kushner, during a meeting on Sunday with members of the Hamas leadership, insisted on the disarmament of the movement and called for “verifiable” measures. He made it clear that “Gaza can never again be a source of terror for Israel,” one of the sources said.
