Live updates: 9 dead in Learjet 60 crash in Palm Beach County – NBC 6 South Florida
A Palm Beach neighborhood is shaken Sunday after a Learjet 60 plunged into a road in Greenacres. Nine people on board the plane were killed in the crash.
Video from the scene shows a huge hole in the ground. Anthony Blackmon, a nearby resident, said he was about 500 feet from the crash and described the experience as terrifying.
“There was debris everywhere. Debris hit my house. Everything was on fire. The road was on fire,” Blackmon said.
“I always saw it on the news, I never thought it would happen so close to someone like it happened today,” Blackman added.
Another resident of the neighborhood, Roger Forcelle, said he felt the plane pass over his house shortly before the accident.
“It shook the whole house. It ran over us and crashed probably within a half-mile of my house,” Forcelle said. “Everyone was leaving their homes because you could feel the tremors. »
He said he later saw a cloud of smoke rising from the area and was unable to return home after going shopping.
Another person who saw the aftermath said it “looked like a meteor hitting the ground.”
The crash also displaced hundreds of people near a mobile home park.
District 3 Commissioner Joel Flores said officials were working to ensure about 600 people affected by the crash had a safe place to stay Sunday night.
“So we have about 600 people and we need to make sure they find shelter tonight,” Flores said.
Flores said the Red Cross was prepared to provide additional services to those affected. He said authorities’ immediate concern was ensuring residents had a safe place to stay.
