These false warnings were sent just minutes before the end of the ceasefire in the Ukrainian frontline town of Oleshky, under Russian occupation since 2022.
The rare six-day ceasefire allowed hundreds of people to evacuate Oleshky, in a deal negotiated with the help of US first lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV.
This is the longest ceasefire observed since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
But fighting is expected to resume in Olechky, with both sides accusing each other of using the period to bolster their frontline forces. And yet, the humanitarian mission arouses a certain optimism.
kyiv officials say this can lead to “systemic solutions” and “pave the way for new steps in the peace process.”
Yana Lantratova, who coordinated the Oleshky operation on the Russian side, says the two countries agreed to carry out “regular humanitarian missions”.
But as Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson says, the Kremlin considers these operations to be separate from the peace process.
