MAP: PG&E could cut power to 29 California counties this week
SACRAMENTO, California. —
About 70,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers in parts of 29 California counties face possible power outages this week.
PG&E said it plans to activate its Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) protocols Wednesday through Saturday to reduce the risk of its equipment starting fires.
PG&E cited high fire risk due to dry and gusty conditions, with the strongest winds expected in the Sierra, South Central Coast and parts of the North Bay and East Bay.
Earlier, PG&E said this planned outage would affect about 30,000 customers. He provided an update to include the number increased due to extremely dry vegetation and winds.
The outages could also affect 3,920 Medical Baseline customers and five tribal governments.
Initially, PG&E said about 3,000 customers who were affected by an earlier PSPS event last weekend could be affected again. That number rose to 4,000. The company also said that approximately 5,700 customers included in the originally planned closures have since been “excluded.”
PG&E’s update came Tuesday around 1:05 p.m. He said the expected outage would be approximately 12 hours from the time of the update, but conditions could change.
