The U.S. Coast Guard is searching off the coast of Massachusetts for a medical plane that was traveling from Bermuda to Boston when it lost contact with the Federal Aviation Administration early Saturday.

A search and rescue alert was issued for the Gulfstream G-100 plane around 1:20 a.m. local time Saturday, the FAA said. The flight was departing from LF Wade International Airport in Bermuda and heading to Boston Logan International Airport. There were six people on board.

The Coast Guard said air and surface crews began searching for the missing plane Saturday morning, noting the current search area is “off the coast of Nantucket.” The FAA is coordinating with the Coast Guard, as well as the Rescue Coordination Center, to locate the air ambulance.

Massport confirmed in a statement to NBC10 Boston that the plane did not arrive at Boston’s Logan Airport as planned.

“Our thoughts are with those on board and their loved ones as the search continues,” a Massport spokesperson said.

The plane, Canadian registered C-GJRP, is owned by Latitude Air Ambulance of Hamilton, Ontario, according to FlightRadar24.

Latitude Air Ambulance’s director of flight operations told NBC News the plane was conducting a medical evacuation to Bermuda.

“We’re always pretty concerned when our team doesn’t report back to us in a timely manner,” Clarence Togeretz told NBC News. “But I repeat, in an optimistic and positive way, this does not mean that the worst has happened.”

Togeretz added that Latitude Air Ambulance has an emergency response plan in place “absolutely for anything that could happen to any of our missions.”

Further details were not immediately available.

NBC10 Boston has contacted Latitude Air Ambulance for comment.
