
Michael Douglas Reveals Kathleen Turner’s Romance, Actress Responds
Michael Douglas revealed in a new extract from his memoirs A hell of a ride that he and Kathleen Turner had a secret romantic relationship while filming 1984 Romance the stoneand the actress responds to her revelation.
THE Fatal attraction the actor shared an exclusive excerpt from his new memoir with People Thursday, writing that he and his then-wife, Diandra Douglas, were separated and “both had extramarital affairs.” He wrote that “Kathleen and I fell in love with each other and began a relationship” and vowed to keep their romance private.
“The chemistry I had with Kathleen Turner was so strong that the public was certain for years that we were in a relationship together while making the film. We both denied it. Romancing The Stone, Jewel of the Nile, War of the Rosesand even doing press a few years ago for The Kominsky methodhe said, highlighting four projects they worked on together.
“The official story was: Yes, we admitted it, we had incredible chemistry. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen put it, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us,” Douglas wrote, according to the excerpt. “It was a lie.”
Turner responded to Douglas’ admission Friday. “Geez, what a fuss about something 40 years ago!” the actress wrote in a statement shared with People. “I love Michael and can’t wait to enjoy the book.”
Elsewhere in his excerpt, the two-time Oscar winner said they lied about their romance for 40 years “to protect my wife and my son.” He said they kept things so secret that director Bob Zemeckis and their co-star Danny DeVito “weren’t aware of it.”
“The truth is that when producing Romance the stoneKathleen and I fell in love with each other and began a relationship,” Douglas wrote. “It was not an overnight affair; it arose naturally from our close collaboration, the pressure we were under, the extent to which we respected and cared for each other, and our attraction to each other. Like every other man in the world at the time, I was knocked down by Kathleen…”
Douglas wrote that during a scheduled visit, Diandra “became suspicious” and spoke with Turner and “made it clear to him that we were still married.”
“Her view on the terms of our separation was different from mine. This gave Kathleen pause. She did not want to intervene,” he wrote. “After that visit, Kathleen and I ended things and I moved back to Diandra.”
