Michael Penix: If we had the ball first in overtime, I could have stayed
The final play of Sunday night’s game saw Falcons backup quarterback Tua Tagovailoa throw an interception to seal the Ravens’ 30-23 overtime victory, while starter Michael Penix watched from the sideline due to a rib injury.
Penix came out for a play late in regulation after taking a big hit from Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson, but returned to throw an incompletion before the Falcons went on the final play of the fourth quarter. The Ravens got the ball back first in overtime and Tagovailoa got back into the game after Baltimore’s touchdown with 2:57 left.
After the loss, Penix said he thought he could have stayed if the Falcons had gotten the ball back first, but “it just started getting worse as we sat there.” Because of this, Penix “didn’t feel like I was going to be able to give our team what we needed to win this football game because of the pain I was feeling.”
Penix will undergo more tests on his injury, but said he doesn’t think it will be a long-term absence.
“Knowing me, I will be ready to go next week because I’ve been away enough in my career,” Penix said, via the team’s website. “I’m going to do everything I can in the training room to make sure I get back to where I want to be. . . . I’m going to work hard to make sure I’m back on that field.
Penix finished 19 of 32 for 240 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons’ first loss since returning to the lineup in Week 3. He will look to be back on the field against the Bears next Sunday.
