Minecraft Review (Switch 2) | Nintendo Life

Minecraft has received around 20 different ports and releases since 2011. It was only a matter of time before one of them appeared for Switch 2, and while there aren’t any major new features, it’s a solid upgrade over the now creaky Switch version.

At its core, Minecraft is still as endlessly deep and imaginative as it’s always been, skillfully integrating survival mechanics with Lego-like world design that encourages creativity. Yet this fundamental foundation has been built upon with a variety of paid and free updates that expand biomes, monsters, crafting recipes, and all sorts of new ways to interact with the world. There’s a lot to dig into here, and if this kind of self-directed gameplay suits you, there’s nothing else that will itch as much.

Switch 2’s most notable upgrades are the inclusion of advanced graphics features collectively called Vibrant Visuals: more advanced reflections on water surfaces, volumetric fog, and dynamic shadows from moving light sources. On the surface, the world is as blocky as it’s always been, but looking closer reveals sometimes surprisingly realistic details that feel much more textured and immersive.

Load times and song generation are significantly faster than the glacial speeds often experienced in the previous generation, making it feel much faster and more responsive. This all runs at a target frame rate of 60fps, although there are instances where frames can collapse depending on what’s happening on screen. If you want a more visually stunning experience, you can change various graphics settings in exchange for a frame rate closer to 30fps.

While it’s nice to have a prettier version of Minecraft on the go, its available control options are oddly lacking. Touchscreen controls are included, which may be nice for handheld gaming, but there are currently no motion control or mouse mode options. While the standard stick controls work well enough, these omissions make the port feel a little more lazy and simplistic.

Unlike some publishers, Microsoft is a little more friendly towards owners of the Switch version. Data and saved worlds can be carried over and the owners of the digital The Switch version has until the end of January 2027 to get the Switch 2 version for free. Physical owners will receive an in-game message to upgrade to the more expensive, “discounted” Ultimate Collection, but will have to pay full price for the base game. This approach seems tight compared to the more generous upgrade paths offered by publishers like CD Projekt Red, but Microsoft is implementing a few efforts to facilitate the transition to Switch 2.

Minecraft Switch 2 is a satisfying, if slightly disappointing, improved version of the hit classic. The lack of mouse and motion controls is odd, and there are occasional frame drops, but this is still a prettier, faster, and overall more enjoyable version of one of the most enduring games ever made. If you’re one of the five people on earth who haven’t played Minecraft yet, this is a great place to get started. If you own it on other platforms, I’d say this port is only worth it if you can’t live without the included Super Mario Mash-Up pack or need a good portable version.

  • Infinite replayability
  • Years of content updates and mods have fleshed out almost every aspect
  • Overall better performance and loading times
  • No motion controls or mouse mode
  • Occasional frame drops

Great 8/10
