A former Northern Arizona University fraternity leader was sentenced Wednesday to two months in prison for his role in a hazing incident that resulted in the death of a student.
Carter Eslick, 20, pleaded guilty to a hazing charge in Coconino County Superior Court in the Jan. 31 death of Colin Daniel Martinez. Eslick was the Delta Tau Delta Engagement Master at the time of the incident.
Martinez died at an off-campus Delta Tau Delta house due to alcohol poisoning, with an autopsy revealing a blood alcohol content of 0.45% shortly after his death.

During the hazing, Martinez was part of a group of four pledges who drank two bottles of vodka to ensure they vomited, according to NBC News.
Hazing witnesses said they tried to monitor the sleeping Martinez for signs of alcohol intoxication, adjusting his sleeping position several times.
Eslick told the court, where Martinez’s parents were present, that he took “full responsibility for the hand I played during this ritual.”
The sentencing comes amid headlines surrounding the mysterious deaths of two Ole Miss students — one of whom was part of a fraternity — and an alleged fraternity cocaine distribution ring at Penn State.

One of the Ole Miss students found dead last week, Robert Strang, was a Phi Delta Theta fraternity brother. He was found at an off-campus house. Authorities found packages of kratom, a commercially available drug that has been described as “gas station heroin,” at the scene of both deaths. However, his role in either death was not immediately clear.
Phi Delta Theta has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
