Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann concluded this year’s “The Last of Us Day” by giving updates on the developer’s current projects, teasing two new The Last of Us projects that will “expand The Last of Us canon beyond Part I and Part II” without confirming whether or not any of them are games, and saying that its next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Project, will be “fully revealed.” next year.
Writing on the Naughty Dog blog, Druckmann thanked fans for helping raise more than $11,000 for AbleGamers before addressing the status of the studio’s current projects. Regarding The Last of Us, which he recently said the developer was “not done with,” Druckmann clarified that previous tease by specifically saying the team had two TLOU projects on its plate. “We have some very exciting new projects in their early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this stage,” he said. “I can tell you that both projects will expand The Last of Us canon beyond Part One and Part Two. The world of The Last of Us means a lot to us, and we won’t return to it unless we have something meaningful to say. We think these stories are worth telling.”
Regarding Naughty Dog’s next game, the sci-fi Intergalactic: The Heretic Project, Druckmann said the studio will remain quiet for the remaining few months of the year, but “in 2027, that will change. We will fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a glimpse of Jordan’s crazy sci-fi adventure.” He also called it Naughty Dog’s most ambitious project to date and asked fans for their patience, perhaps an indirect olive branch to fans frustrated by Intergalactic’s no-show at Sony’s recent State of Play. “There’s electricity in the studio right now as all the pieces come together, and we’re thrilled to finally be able to unveil Intergalactic in all its glory,” he said. “But… we have to cook some more.”
Druckmann concluded, “We know it’s been a long time since we’ve had much to share with you. We don’t take your continued support for granted. We’re working incredibly hard to create something worth your patience.”
Meanwhile, it appears that the HBO TV series adaptation of The Last of Us will end with the upcoming third season.
