Matthew Perry may have died at 54, but based on the love shown in the trailer for the Netflix docuseries The one about Matthew PerryTHE Friends The star has lived a full life.
The one about Matthew Perry is directed by Mary Robertson (Quiet on set: The dark side of children’s television) and marks “the first in-depth and definitive documentary about the beloved Friends star, told by some of the people who knew him best,” according to Maxine Productions. (Robertson’s Maxine Productions is part of Sony Pictures Television.)
“Told through intimate testimonies from close family and friends, this documentary event reveals the real Matthew Perry – generous, funny, vulnerable, larger than life – and the battles he fought to become the man behind the icon,” the logline reads. “A raw testament to a life fully lived and the honesty that became his greatest legacy.”
The one about Matthew Perrya three-part series, includes interviews with Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, as well as Matthew’s closest friends.
“It took me a while to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life – to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction,” Bowick said in a statement accompanying the announcement of the documentary series. “As my sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be, and the work I dedicated my life to. Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved. I hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation of who he truly was and the legacy he leaves behind.”
Perry, who struggled with drugs and alcohol for much of his life, died in 2023 after taking too much ketamine and drowning in his hot tub.
Robertson executive produces the series with Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman. Lora Moftah is co-executive producer and Jessica Call is producer. The one about Matthew Perry will be released in full on Netflix on October 27.
