Hackers have discovered a new method of jailbreaking the PlayStation 5. This wouldn’t normally be a big deal. Several exploits taking over the console have been circulating for some time now. Unfortunately for Sony, the new “Relapse” jailbreak exploit works on all PS5 firmware versions except one: version 14.00.00, which is less than two weeks old. This makes it a much larger vulnerability for the company to manage, and one that could have major hacking implications on the platform.
Two factors contribute to the importance of this development. The first is that those who recently purchased PlayStation 5s but have not updated to the latest firmware will still be able to access the new exploit. Basically, this means that all retail PS5s, including PS5 Pros, that have been on shelves for more than a few weeks will be vulnerable to the “Relapse” jailbreak method.
The second reason is a much bigger problem for Sony. Modern PS5 games often require users to be running an up-to-date version of the system firmware in order to start. This means that if you want to update a pirated game, either for quality of life reasons or to take advantage of DLC releases, you usually also need to install the most recent firmware.

Since the “Relapse” jailbreak method works on PS5 systems running version 26.05-13.60.00, released in late July, any games released before update 14.00.00, released on September 16, 2026, could potentially be compromised by hackers.
Marvel’s Wolverinefor example, shipped on September 15. To add insult to injury, the “Relapse” jailbreak method could be implemented in less than a minute.
Of course, Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t the only recent game involved here. Users on the r/PS5_Jailbreak subreddit are reporting that The Witcher 3 Remasteredwhich was just released today, can also work somehow using the Relapse jailbreak. Expect a new firmware update to reduce the longevity of this exploit in the immediate future, but as of now, it’s unclear how Sony can put the genie back in the bottle for all previously released PS5 games and updates.
