A Brooklyn, New York, man died after his bag got stuck between the doors of a subway train which then dragged him down.
A man was leaving a Manhattan-bound A train at the Utica Avenue station in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn on Monday when his shopping bag got stuck between the subway doors.
The man was then dragged backwards, pulled between train cars and across the tracks, ABC7 reports, citing investigators.
New York police, who received a 911 call about the crash around 6:05 p.m. ET Monday, identified the man as Yaw Boahene of Brooklyn.
“Upon arrival, officers were notified that a 57-year-old man had been found unresponsive and unresponsive on the platform of the northbound ‘A’ train. EMS responded and pronounced (the man) deceased (on scene). The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing,” the NYPD said in a statement.
Speaking to ABC7, a witness said she was on her way home from school when the incident happened, causing panic on the subway platform.
While subway accidents are rare, in 2022 a 20-year-old man was killed after his clothes became caught between the doors of a 1 train at the Columbus Circle station in Manhattan during rush hour.

According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which oversees New York City’s public transit system, subway rider accidents increased slightly in 2025, by 2 percent.
