NFL suspends officials Jeff Seeman and Adrian Hill after viral videos with Trey McBride and Eric Wilson
The NFL confirmed Monday that linesman Jeff Seeman was suspended for two games after he was seen yelling at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride and that referee Adrian Hill was suspended for one game after his response to Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson inadvertently running him down, according to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer.
The suspensions came for “unprofessional conduct toward a player” and were handed down by NFL vice president of officiating Ramon George.
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel also made headlines after receiving an unsportsmanlike penalty for insulting an official, a decision that took him by surprise.
“I told him it was a terrible call, I won’t say effing,” Vrabel told reporters. “I’ve said that 87 times since I’ve been head coach. It wasn’t anything derogatory. You’d have to ask him. I think he was being a little sensitive.”
Seeman’s profanity toward McBride quickly went viral and prompted a statement in response from NFLPA executive director JC Tretter.
“This type of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable,” he wrote on Sunday. “Players are routinely held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standards.”
Wilson, meanwhile, said the situation between him and Hill was a misunderstanding and was not serious.
“It was funny, honestly,” he told reporters after the game. “I ended up apologizing to him and explaining the situation to him. He was cool about it. He understood what was going on. He just said he didn’t want me and (Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II) to argue. He said he was just trying to break us up.”
“I think Adrian is a very good official and he does a very good job,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell added Monday. “And I think it’s just a quick moment that happened and we can put it behind us, hopefully.”
