‘Nobody wants that’ Consulting rabbi calls Adam Brody an ‘ignorant Jew’
Following his public support for “Free Palestine,” Adam Brody is facing backlash not only from viewers, but also from a recent colleague.
Before season 3 of Nobody wants thatpremiering October 22 on Netflix, the series’ former technical consultant Rabbi Steve Leder called the two-time Golden Globe nominated actor an “ignorant Jew” for calling the Israeli attack on Gaza a genocide.
“Hello Adam, you may not remember me. My name is Rabbi Steve Leder and I was the technical advisor for season 1 of Nobody wants that“, he prefaced in the video. “My job was to make sure your character was authentic and that everything about Judaism in Season 1 was authentic.”
In Nobody wants thatagnostic podcaster Joanne Williams (Kristen Bell) begins an unexpected romance with Rabbi Noah Roklov (Brody), which shakes up both their families as Joanne becomes immersed in Noah’s culture and decides to convert to Judaism.
Leder continued: “Your statement the other day about a genocide in Gaza was truly shocking, not only because of your misuse and misinterpretation of the word ‘genocide’ – there is no genocide in Gaza, there are genocides happening in other countries, but you didn’t mention any of them. You, by your own admission, are a relatively ignorant Jew, and your ignorance really showed itself the other day.
“If you’re going to use a word like ‘genocide,’ you should know what that means. And by the way, being so flippant about a word like ‘genocide’ – ‘hey, put me down for (thinking it’s) genocide’, like you’re asking for a table for two at Craig’s, is disgusting,” he added. “Here’s some more technical advice; if you don’t say anything about something, you shouldn’t say anything about it.”
Since the ongoing Israeli strikes on Gaza following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, several organizations have described Israel’s actions as genocide against the Palestinians, including the United Nations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
Last week, Brody said GQ“Describe me as thinking this is genocide. Describe me as wanting a free Palestine. It’s horrible that it took so much death and misery, but I feel like this is reaching a breaking point that it should have had some time ago. I hope another administration can really do some good and correct some of these policies that are helping to make this situation as horrible as it is.”
Brody’s comments come after several of his Hollywood peers were arrested among around 100 people outside the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where they were protesting the arrival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Thursday.
