Altercation between two students leads to shooting at Burke High, Omaha police say
OMAHA, Neb. —
Omaha police said an altercation between two Burke High School students led to a shooting Wednesday morning.
One of the students was shot in the arm and his injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said. The suspect is in police custody after the incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m.

The students were involved in an altercation in the parking lot near the baseball fields at the time of the incident, investigators said. The suspect then fled.

A Douglas County deputy, who is also a school resource officer, responded to the scene, treated the student and recovered the firearm, officials said.
Omaha police told KETV the victim was not in possession of a firearm before the altercation. During the altercation, the student was shot and was then able to retrieve the suspect’s gun.
When law enforcement responded, the victim turned the gun over to authorities, Omaha police said. Only one firearm was involved in the incident.
Investigators said the suspect was identified from a photo of a witness and taken into custody at the school.
The scene is safe and secure, authorities said. All students and staff are safe.
Omaha police said the students were under the age of 18.
Witnesses are asked to go to Burke Boulevard, south of the school, and find a police officer to report what they saw, Omaha police said.
