On recording, Paxton says Cornyn ‘wants me to lose’
Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton has said publicly that he wants the support of Sen. John Cornyn, but behind closed doors there is reason to believe he thinks his fellow Republican is pushing him into the crater. In an audio recording of a September 24 fundraiser in Washington obtained by CNN, the state attorney general is heard saying that Cornyn is “clearly not helping.” He wants me to lose.” He adds that Cornyn said at a restaurant in Dallas that Paxton “is going to lose” and that Republicans “have to learn” that their choices have consequences. Cornyn’s camp denies the restaurant story, with Councilman Rob Jesmer saying the exchange “did not happen” and noting that Cornyn committed only to supporting the GOP ticket.
The leak is the latest in a series of recordings of the same event that have forced Paxton to defend himself as he faces Democrat James Talarico in a tight nine-figure race that could help decide control of the Senate. Polls show Paxton lost some non-MAGA Republicans after a brutal primary in which Cornyn, a longtime critic who once called Paxton’s legal troubles an embarrassment, was defeated. President Trump, who helped paxton’s runoff victory and rallied behind him in San Antonio this week, said he had “no regrets” about supporting him. But the candidate may not have enjoyed being president upon his return to the White House. Trump suggested Talarico “immediately show up on a debate stage” to take on Paxton, according to the AP. Talarico challenged Paxton to debate, but the Republican remained silent.
