OpenAI will make its artificial intelligence models available to developers via Google cloud, after years of competition between the two companies.
For OpenAI, the effort reflects a growing desire to expand the distribution of its technology to enterprise developers. This is key as the creator of ChatGPT seeks to expand its business beyond its consumer roots, and the move puts OpenAI’s models on top three cloud infrastructure providers.
Less than six months ago, OpenAI said Microsoft would no longer have the exclusive license to its intellectual property. The next day, cloud leader Amazon revealed plans to host OpenAI models.
Now Google is taking a chance, bringing OpenAI’s GPT products to its cloud model garden and its Antigravity coding tool in the coming weeks.
“Google Cloud’s long-standing investment in machine learning and AI has made it a destination for AI workloads as well as the developers and data scientists who build them,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
Google moved into cloud computing this year. The segment’s annualized revenue growth accelerated to about 82% in the second quarter from 63% in the first quarter, driven in part by strong demand for AI models and custom chips. Amazon and Microsoft reported cloud growth of 37% and 42%, respectively, in the second quarter. All three will release their quarterly results next week.
Most corporate AI spending is on OpenAI and Anthropic, according to data from corporate card issuer Ramp, although some corporate IT departments have integrated Google’s Gemini models into their systems. In September, Google announced its next-generation Gemini 4 Argon model.
OpenAI was founded in 2015 in part to offset the focus of AI research at companies like Google. Two years later, Google employees submitted the influential Transformer academic paper that propelled AI, but it was OpenAI that helped advance the technology with ChatGPT. Today, OpenAI is courting investors with a valuation of $1.4 trillion and targeting an IPO.
Google and OpenAI previously teamed up last year, when the AI lab said it was using Google’s cloud to run ChatGPT and its application programming interface.
