OpenAI reportedly in talks to raise $30 billion at a valuation of $1.4 billion
OpenAI is in talks with investors to raise at least $30 billion in a pre-IPO funding round at a valuation of around $1.4 trillion, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
Investors are eager to pour more funds into the ChatGPT creator ahead of its planned public market debut next year. While Anthropic momentarily surpassed OpenAI earlier this year, the recent strategic refocus on key areas like coding has fueled a 70% increase in revenue generated since July, reaching $40 billion in August, according to the report.
The company had already raised $122 billion in March at a valuation of $852 billion. This funding round was supposed to be its final private fundraising before an IPO, which until recently was expected to take place this year. However, CEO Sam Altman has now ruled out a public introduction in 2026 to prioritize AI safety.
“I think it’s unacceptable to take a 10 percent chance of killing everyone by the end of the decade,” he recently told Fortune, in response to security researchers’ warnings that AI poses an existential risk to humanity.
The new fundraising, if it comes to fruition, will serve as a bridge to the IPO, according to Bloomberg.
OpenAI did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
