Padres activate Walker Buehler to NLDS roster
Padres reinstated Walker Bühler from the paternity list during the Monday day off. Randy Vasquezwho had been active in the first two Division Series games as a substitute, was removed from the roster.
San Diego has started Robbie Ray And Michael King for the two games in Milwaukee. Ray failed to escape the third inning in a 3-2 loss in the first game. King pitched very well for over five innings in the second game. San Diego nevertheless suffered a heartbreaking defeat when Jackson Chourio scored a two-run single against Mason Miller with two outs in the ninth.
Both games were so close that the Padres used exclusively their most important relievers: Miller, Adrien Morejón, Bradley Rodriguez, Yuki Matsui And Jason Adam. Vásquez, who was listed as a long man, did not make an appearance. He will miss the rest of the series, barring an injury to the pitching staff.
It remains to be seen whether Buehler will be a factor. The Padres have counted Nick Pivetta take the ball in Game 3, the first of what they hope will be three straight must-win games. The Brewers fight back with Dustin May. Neither team has announced plans for a possible Game 4 if the Padres avoid elimination.
San Diego manager Craig Stammen told reporters (including MLB.com’s Jared Greenspan) that Buehler was an option to start Game 4 but would be available in relief tomorrow. It’s an all-around approach for the brothers, with their backs against the wall. Buehler posted a 4.63 ERA with a slightly below-average 20.1% strikeout rate in 32 starts this year, ranking second on the team in innings. He struggled early but had a solid 3.62 ERA after the All-Star Break.
