The Notre Dame recruit and his wife, Anna Raridon, announced Tuesday that they lost their baby boy to anencephaly, a fatal birth defect that prevents the forebrain and brain from forming in the womb.
There is no cure or standard treatment for this disease. Around 75% of affected pregnancies end in stillbirth. Infants born alive usually die within hours or days.
Devastating.

“When Eli and I went for our 20-week anatomical exam, excited to see our adorable baby boy, our hearts were changed forever,” Anna wrote on her Instagram account. “Our little one was diagnosed with anencephaly, a life-threatening condition that he would not survive outside the womb.
“While we are absolutely devastated that we were unable to bring our little boy home, I am grateful to have loved him deeply, kept him safe, and been his home for the last 9 months before he was called back to heaven.”
What follows is a mother who, rather than lose herself in the indescribable pain of losing a baby, chose to lean on her faith during a time of deep tribulation.

“I have often found it easy to glorify the Lord when life is going well, but it is in our deepest trials that we are closest to Him,” Anna continued. “We may never understand the reason for this journey, but one thing we know for sure is that God promises to take care of his children.
“I believe our little boy was lovingly woven in his mother’s womb by God, knowing how deeply he would be loved by our families, our friends, Eli and I. Even though his time with us was brief, his life is still precious, his purpose still meaningful, and he will always be a part of our story.”
And then the Raridons left a message for their little boy:
“I have loved you every second of your life and I will miss you every second of mine. What a sweet, sweet reunion will be ours🤍”

CDC data and statistics on birth defects report that approximately 1 in 4,762 people are born with anencephaly. This represents approximately 0.02% of live births.
But if the defect is not necessarily common, it is entirely personal. The literature indicates that the recurrence rate after a pregnancy affected by anencephaly rises considerably to between 2 and 5%.
And even though this means there is a 95-98% chance that the Raridons will never be affected by this disease again, their concern must be real.
