Priest killed by falling crucifix during live-streamed mass
A priest was killed when a crucifix fell in a church in Ecuador while celebrating a mass broadcast live on the Internet.
Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died Saturday at the Perpetuo Socorro Church in the southern Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, according to a statement from the city’s archdiocese posted Monday on Facebook.
Video of the incident shows Sánchez leading mass when a large wooden cross that was on the altar behind him falls and hits him in the head.
Screams are heard in the congregation, and several people enter the frame and rush towards the priest.
On Sunday, the church celebrated a eucharist in memory of Sánchez, presided over by Cardinal Luis Cabrera, archbishop of Guayaquil.
“We are grateful for all the condolences from around the world, and especially for your prayers for the eternal rest of the soul of Patricio Sánchez,” the statement read.
According to CNN affiliate Ecuavisa, the priest was preparing to lead a wedding ceremony when the tragedy occurred.
Police have not yet commented on the incident, Ecuavisa reported.
CNN has contacted the Archdiocese of Guayaquil for comment.
