Rapper Rick Ross arrested in Miami Beach for battery by strangulation
Rapper Rick Ross was arrested Thursday morning by Miami Beach police on domestic violence charges, including battery by strangulation, according to Miami-Dade jail and court records.
Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts, was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 6:10 a.m. Thursday.
The 50-year-old rapper faces one count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. Both charges are listed as involving domestic violence.
Ross’ attorney, Bradley Horenstein, denied the allegations against his client and urged the public not to rush to judgment as the case moves through the legal process.
“All I can say is the allegations are false. He is innocent. Everything is going to be revealed,” Horenstein told CBS News Miami. “We just ask that you let the process play out before rushing to judgment, because the truth will come out.”
Bond was listed at $5,000 for the strangulation battery and $1,000 for the battery charge, for a total of $6,000.
His arraignment is scheduled for October 22.
Details about what led to Ross’ arrest, including the time and location of the alleged incident and his relationship to the alleged victim, were not immediately available.
CBS News Miami requested Ross’ arrest report from the Miami Beach Police Department and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
The arrest comes days after Ross’ former girlfriend Jazzma Kendrick publicly accused him of physically assaulting her. According to People.com, Kendrick claimed on social media that Ross injured her lip in an incident that she said happened about a month earlier. Ross has not publicly responded to the allegations.
It was not immediately clear whether the allegations were related to Thursday’s arrest.
Ross, a Miami-area native known for songs like “Hustlin’,” has been a prominent figure in hip-hop for two decades.
