Scientists identify new species of penguin for the first time in over a century
For the first time in more than 100 years, scientists have identified a new species of penguin using DNA analysis.
The gentoo penguin found in Antarctica and on isolated islands in the Indian Ocean has always been treated as a single species. But the researchers were able to show that over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, the Papuan split into four distinct evolutionary lineages, each of which, the researchers believe, should constitute its own species.
