Small plane crashes near Petaluma Municipal Airport; 2 deaths
Two people died when their small plane crashed near the Petaluma Municipal Airport Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The plane crashed on the grounds of Rooster Run Golf Course, adjacent to the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration said a preliminary report indicated that a home-built Van’s RV-7A single-engine plane with two people on board crashed in a field shortly after takeoff around 10:45 a.m.
Petaluma Police Lt. Zilverio Rivera said that when first responders arrived, the plane was fully engulfed in flames.
“The fire was extinguished about three minutes after our city firefighters arrived, and once the fire was extinguished, we noticed the two dead people on the plane,” Rivera said.
The two people killed were not immediately identified. Police said E. Washington Street, between Garfield Drive and Adobe Road, was closed during the response and investigation into the crash.
The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.
