Saturday evening liveThe Weekend Update mocked Donald Trump’s actions as he hosted his Chinese counterpart for a three-day state visit, as well as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s transphobic military mantra.
“On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington for a state visit, and President Trump picked him up at the airport like an out-of-work boyfriend,” began Colin Jost, referring to Jinping’s arrival at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where Trump rolled out a 100-foot red carpet. “Then Trump ordered military aircraft to perform a flyover to project force.”
Jost then moves on to flyby of the B-2 bombers. Trump was seen grimacing next to Jinping, who looked stoic.
“I don’t know if he was projecting force,” Jost commented, “but it looked like he was projecting something.”
Later in the segment, Jost turned to Hegseth’s speech this summer at Texas A&M University.
“No more social experiences. Just training,” Hegseth told the cadets. “No more trannies. Just practice.”
Jost had a few questions for Hegseth.
“Why were you thinking that, buddy?” he wondered. “That phrase sounds like something he repeats to stop himself from having uncomfortable fantasies.”
Co-anchor Michael Che then discussed the administration’s launch of the 24/7 “Trump TV” streaming channel, after temporarily banning CNN, Politico and MS NOW at the White House.
“But if it’s Trump TV, what is Paramount Plus?” he joked, referring to the platform’s many shows set on ranches, like 1883, King of Tulsa, Dutton RanchAnd Yellow stone.
Che also commented on Mitch McConnell’s return to the Senate after a three-month absence, due to what his office said was a fall followed by a case of pneumonia. The 84-year-old man, rather than answering journalists’ questions, often brandishes the “peace” sign, “to show what he refuses to rest in,” Che joked.
