Sony brings back the original Walkman headset with USB-C
In 1979, Sony released the original TPS-L2 Walkman cassette player alongside the MDR-3 headphones, and together they helped popularize listening to music on the go. Now the company is bringing these headphones back for the modern era with the MDR-3R, which keeps the classic look but adds USB-C.
The MDR-3R faithfully recreates the original design, including lightweight open-ear construction and iconic blue and orange ear cushions, which you can swap out to suit your mood. Even the packaging and instruction manual are inspired by the MDR-3.

Under the hood, the headphones use the same 23mm drivers as the original, and Sony says the tuning stays close to the MDR-3’s sound signature, with some subtle refinements for modern listening preferences. Of course, there are also other modern additions, namely a built-in microphone for calls and an in-line remote control. No charging, pairing or updating is necessary – just plug them into a compatible device and that’s it.

Alongside the standard model, Sony is also launching the MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition, inspired by the Max headphones from the Netflix series. These feature an engraved Stranger Things logo, red and black ear cushions, and custom packaging.

The MDR-3Rs are available now for $59.99 from Sony, Amazon, and other retailers in the United States. The Stranger Things edition costs $79.99.
