EXCLUSIVE: Will the real Ben Reilly please stand up? Prime Video is closing in on an order for a new series set in Sony Pictures’ Marvel Universe, based on the popular Marvel Comics Clone Saga storyline, specifically the second Clone Saga story arc that focuses on two Spider-Man clones, Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker, sources tell Deadline.
Representatives for Amazon MGM Studios and Sony TV declined to comment.
The new series, written by Chinese born in the United States creator Kelvin Yu, will succeed Black Spiderwhich was recently canceled by Prime Video after one season. It starred Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly whose alter ego was the main character. In the comics, Spider-Man Noir is Peter Parker, whose identity was changed for the television series due to rights exclusions.
Details about the new series are scarce.
In the comics, Ben Reilly is a stable and successful Spider-Man clone whose name is a combination of Peter’s Uncle Ben’s first name and his Aunt May’s maiden name and who develops his own superhero identity, the Scarlet Spider. Kaine Parker is the first defective Spider-Man clone.
Sources warn that while the comics serve as a source of inspiration and inspiration, there could be significant changes in the screen adaptation.
There is conflicting information, with some claiming that the TV series will follow Ben and Kaine as they grapple with their newly discovered clone identities while facing off against other clones. (Another clone in the comics becomes the villain Spidercide.)
Others claim that the series could change Ben and Kaine’s origins as clones and that they could adopt new identities.
In what is considered the Clone Saga’s most controversial twist in the books, Ben Reilly was at one point declared the real Spider-Man and Peter Parker the clone, a change that was ultimately reversed after fan backlash.
As Black Spiderthe new series is part of the multi-title deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to generate a suite of television series based on intellectual property from Sony’s Marvel character universe, most of them set in the world of Spider-Man. It will also make its linear debut on Amazon’s MGM+ platform, followed by a streaming release on its sibling Prime Video.
Amy Pascal, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who oversee the Sony TV universe and serve as executive producers. Black Spiderare also expected to produce the Clone Saga series with Yu.
As Deadline reported at the time of Black Spider cancellation earlier this month, Amazon and Sony TV continued to develop several projects under the deal, with one close to getting a series order.
