Sony’s multi-million dollar GTA 6 PS5 marketing strategy is already working

Sony’s unprecedented multi-million dollar marketing campaign for GTA 6 PS5 is already paying off. A short reaction video posted by giant streamer IShowSpeed shows the platform holder’s approach operating in real time.
The manufacturer paid handsomely to have its console closely associated with Rockstar’s upcoming open-world game, and the launch trailer is full of PlayStation iconography, including a short statement that the game “plays better on PS5.”
In Speed’s reaction video, he asks his cat if he should play on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
That’s when his friend asks him to rewind the clip and points Speed to the aforementioned catchphrase.
“I most definitely play on a PS5,” he concludes in a video likely to be watched by millions of people. “If GTA 6 literally says ‘it’s the best game on PS5’, why would you play on Xbox, eh? »
The reality is that the PS5 and Xbox Series
In terms of differentiating features, Sony confirmed that GTA 6 will take full advantage of the DualSense’s unique attributes, such as haptic feedback and its durable triggers.
“(The DualSense will) put the sights, sounds and sensations of Jason and Lucia’s story into your hands,” noted a PS Blog post earlier this year.
But in terms of raw performance and visuals, the PS5 and Xbox Series X are comparable in power, so the results will likely be broadly similar on both consoles. Obviously, the Xbox Series S, which is considerably less powerful, will be forced to downgrade the experience.
Another wild card here is Sony’s recent introduction of QSSR, an AI-based upscaler for base PS5 hardware that works similarly to the PS5 Pro’s PSSR. There’s no confirmation that GTA 6 will use it yet, but the technology is available to third-party developers like Rockstar and could give the PS5 version an edge.
But ultimately, I think we’re only seeing the results of great marketing at play here.
Sony will have spent a lot of money aligning its brand with the biggest release of the generation, and as Speed demonstrates here, that’s easily going to sway many consumers.
