Sony’s quietly improved PS5 core hardware with a number of internal optimizations

Sony is known for optimizing its hardware with each generation, and it looks like it’s shipping refined base PS5 Slim consoles, starting with its Marvel’s Wolverine console.
A Polish hardware expert recently took to X (or Twitter) to share his findings, discovering a number of minor improvements over previous versions of Sony’s flagship console.
Among the changes are an optimized motherboard layout, improved cooling (which matches the PS5 Pro), a different heatsink, and a few other minor tweaks.
These adjustments likely represent cost-cutting efforts on Sony’s part or reflect changes to manufacturing contracts.
While these changes are unlikely to make a difference to the end user, the CMOS battery inside the console is now easier to access and replace thanks to the improvements, so this is appreciated. Like any battery, these eventually die, so simplifying their replacement is a welcome change.
The original poster states that these changes are so recent that the company hasn’t even made changes to the console manual to reflect them, which is kind of funny.
As I mentioned at the start of the article, Sony has always made minor changes like this to its consoles, so it’s not really a surprise to see it further refine the device as it reaches its sixth anniversary.
In particular, the company will look to reduce manufacturing costs as much as possible now, as the global memory crisis continues to drive up the price of hardware β with no signs of improving anytime soon.
