Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy regrets altercation with Aaron Rodgers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are now 2-2 after a 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night. But it was a verbal exchange between quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy that got as much attention as the outcome of the game itself.
On the Steelers’ first drive, Rodgers yelled at McCarthy from the sidelines, saying, “What the fuck! Call it!” Rodgers was upset that the play call was taking too long. The show caught his words on a hot mic, then caught McCarthy seemingly speaking them directly back to Rodgers, using his own colorful language.
Asked about the verbal exchange after the game, McCarthy said he wished he hadn’t used the language he did.
“Communication is sometimes not the best choice of words, but everyone is competing on the field,” McCarthy said via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “I think what is said on the field, the way I grew up in this game, usually stays on the field. That’s not the case today. I understand that. But any negative communication from me, I would like to not use those words.”
Rodgers and McCarthy were of course fine later, hugging and laughing after Rodgers’ quarterback hit for a two-point conversion. It’s also not something unheard of in the NFL or sports as a whole. It’ll be talked about because it happened in front of a national audience, but these two have been working together for a long time – it’s largely a nothing burger.
